SETI - The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
Our heavens are constantly being scanned by radio telescopes for signals from other worlds.
Organisations are collecting data that needs to be scanned for signs of other-wordly intelligence.
This is where you come in. You can find out more about the SETI@home application and download it from this site (Berkeley University). When run, it will collect a 'chunk' of data for your PC at home to analyse. The SETI@home program can either run constantly in the background or only as a screensaver - you choose. When it has finished analysing the current work unit, the application will either prompt you for connection to the internet or connect by itself (again, you choose!), to upload your results and collect another work unit to examine. If you have any further queries my email address is on the front page.
So that you don't feel like you're doing all the work by yourself, the kind folks at Berkeley allow SETI@home users to join 'clubs' where like-minded people can pool their statistics together. This is where I come in. I have created a group called 'Back to the Future fans' that needs time travel devotees to join me to find life 'out there'.
Simply click on the logo below to view current stats or join the group.
For tips on speeding up the time spent analysing your work units go to Paradise Place. Thanks also go to webmaster, Robin, for the logo above and the java source
When opened, the Seti application shows a real time graph of the data being analysed.
There are also programs available to show statistics on previously analysed work units. The one pictured above is called SETI Monitor
